We all need help, you know, and we all once made our first icon. Mine was a crappy resizing of an Ian McKellen pic, made his face propotions all wrong. He looked like he had not slept for days... *g*
If you are serious about wanting to make icons, there is this nifty comminity, icon_tutorial. Lots of hints to be found :)
